Speedmaster with Anicolor displayed in Tokyo
Heidelberg has displayed the Speedmaster SM 52 ten-color press with perfecting device and Anicolor inking unit at IGAS 2007, in Tokyo. The press combines the benefits of simultaneous printing on both sides of the sheet with all the advantages of Anicolor - up to 90 percent reduction in startup waste combined with quality and consistent inking. Depending on the print motif, the press is ready for production after only 40 sheets. The press is thus ideal for short runs with frequent job changes. Heidelberg introduced the new Anicolor inking unit technology on a Speedmaster SM 52 four-color press at Ipex 06. This technology allows the advantages of offset printing to be harnessed for very short runs as well as longer runs. The major plus point of the Speedmaster SM 52 with Anicolor inking unit lies in the fact that it employs the tried-and-tested Alcolor continuous dampening system and therefore uses commercially available printing plates.

For Sustainable Green Printing
PIA/GATF has joined with the Specialty Graphic Imaging Association (SGIA) and the Flexographic Technical Association (FTA) to form one central location for information on sustainable, “green” printing activities.
Recently within the printing industry, the importance placed on the level of a company’s “environmental friendliness” has increased dramatically. Many printers are facing a growing number of inquiries regarding sustainable printing practices, and according to a recent survey conducted by PIA/GATF, over 90 percent of printers believe that their customers will require “green” printing in the future. In an effort to assist the printing community in this push for sustainability, PIA/GATF and its partners have established the Sustainable Green Printing Partnership (SGP Partnership).
The SGP Partnership is comprised of volunteer print leaders and other key players from each of the three associations. Sustainability is defined as the method of using a natural resource so that it is not depleted or permanently damaged. When looking at sustainability within the printing industry, there are three key elements to consider: the product, the process, and the support system surrounding them. The first involves the materials used to create the product (ink, paper, adhesives, etc.). The second refers to the manufacturing process, and the third includes the building, energy consumption, employees, and other supporting activities, such as solid waste removal and transportation. All of these elements are important when determining a printer’s overall environmental impact.

EskoArtwork installs 1000th Cyrel DI
EskoArtwork announced that the 1000th Cyrel® Digital Imager (CDI) has been shipped and installed at German based Scholler GmbH & Co KG in Nuremberg, a member of Matthews International.
Since its introduction as the world’s first digital imager for flexo plates at Drupa in 1995, over 70% of all flexo digital imagers sold globally are CDIs. “We are proud that the CDI has helped flexography to develop into a significant printing technology — not just in cost but also in quality. And we see plenty of room for growth in digital flexo. Only 20% of platemaking facilities worldwide are digital, and the demand for flexo related packaging is growing due to significant increases in quality, reliability and consistency,” says Jürgen Andresen, EskoArtwork Vice President Flexo Business. “Brand owners and converters specifically ask for digital flexo because of the enhanced print quality, increased productivity and consistent results from plate run to plate run, all of which help reduce time to market.”

European printers seek glory in Boston
The seven gold prize winners from Europe and the Middle East at this year's Sappi European Printers of the Year awards in Athens are now preparing to compete for global recognition at the 2007 Sappi International Printers of the Year competition to be held in Boston, USA, on Friday 12 October.
Their projects will be judged by an independent panel of experts together with gold winning projects from Sappi regional competitions in North America, Central and South America, Asia, Australasia and Africa in each of nine award categories. Last year, six European printers took home a coveted Sappi 'Elephant' trophy.
The European printers in contention this year are Graphische Betriebe Eberl, Germany (Annual Reports); Drukkerij Matthys, Belgium (Books); Fontegrafica, Italy (Brochures, General Print and Printers' Own Promotion); Kal Press, Israel (Calendars); Grafiche SIZ, Italy (Catalogues); EuroFlex, The Netherlands (Packaging and Labels); and Druckpartner Druck- und Medienhaus, Germany (Magazines).
In conjunction with the 2008 awards, Sappi is again running its 'Be There' contest. Printers are asked to estimate the number of projects received, attach the document to their completed entry form and submit it together with their printed pieces. The printer whose estimate is exactly or closest to the actual number of entries received will be invited to the gala awards ceremony. Last year's 'Be There' winner was Belgian printer VCP in Bruges.

Stora goes for folded trays
Stora Enso is promoting the new Trayforma Special, a carton that has been developed for folded trays. It provides lots of printable surfaces to use for branding and product information, and contains chemi-thermomechanical pulp for additional stiffness and bulk. White PET coating makes the board suitable for microwaves and conventional ovens and preserves the board’s pure white look after cooking. “Thanks to its smooth surface, the new board quality gives more brilliance to the print. The board also performs very well in die cutting,” says Christian Lorenz from the printing house Masterpack. “Our targets were to improve the strength of the package and to ensure good runnability in high-speed automatic packaging lines. The package must stand freezing as well as heating. Purity and good taint and odour properties of the board are equally important as the product must pass through our stringent quality control,” says Michael Pauls, owner of Prima, a company that has adopted the new product.

Pantone Goe creates serious problems?
Managing director and trend watcher VIGC (Flemish Innovation Center for Graphic Communication) Eddy Hagen has looked into the newly launched Pantone Goe system and has spoken to Pantone Inc. at Graph Expo in Chicago. “Although the new Pantone Goe system offers some nice features, especially the color communication using Lab, there are some serious issues in terms of design and documentation. We want to warn users of possible pitfalls when applying Pantone Goe.” comments Eddy Hagen. “We sent out an open letter to Pantone and notification to our members but find it important enough to share this with other users in the market.”
These are the main problem areas VIGC has detected: standard Pantone CMYK conversions problematic and apparently Pantone does not clearly identify which RGB color space (sRGB, AdobeRGB) is used for the RGB-values next to patches in the new Goe color guide.
Eddy Hagen concludes: “We hope Pantone will correct these problems as soon as possible as it will create serious headaches with printers, brand owners and prepress specialists.”

HP Scitex scores with Manchester
HP Scitex technology has been used to print a giant-sized graphic of the Manchester United football team for its Old Trafford grounds in the UK. The job, comprising a series of window graphics, was awarded to MediaCo.Following a specially commissioned photo shoot with the Manchester United team, the artwork was printed at 336 dpi in six-colours on a clear vision adhesive substrate in just two hours. MediaCo, a large format printing company based in Manchester, then cut the panels and fitted it together like a jigsaw and installed the window graphics, which took a further two days. The unique artwork, measuring 15m x 49m, is on display above the club shop and promotes the team’s latest home kit for the coming season.
MediaCo installed the HP Scitex TJ8300 just three weeks prior to securing the Manchester United job. It has also installed an in-line Fotoba automated cutter, which will help maximise the potential of its HP Scitex printer by further reducing turnaround times. Custom built by Fotoba, the fully automated cutter, which has the ability to cut a full sheet in only 45 seconds, is capable of handling all materials supported by the HP Scitex TJ8300.

New objectives for the future of print
On 3-4 September, Intergraf member Directors met at the annual Directors Conference, this year hosted by the British Printing Industries Federation in Stratford upon Avon. The main topic for discussion was the European Commission study on competitiveness of the Graphic Industry. The directors praised the clear identification of the sector’s challenges and acknowledged the specific objectives for sustaining competitiveness of the European Graphic Industry as the way ahead for their member companies across Europe. The directors defined together an action plan to promote and support the European Graphic Industry, reflecting the objectives identified in the study.
Jean-Pierre Haber from the European Commission, who attended the meeting, also welcomed the report as an excellent basis to work out a strategy and common vision for the European Graphic Industry for the next years. He said the European Commission will help the industry with the implementation of an action plan. Whilst to some extent concentrating on the threat from the Far East, and China in particular, the report identified a lack of a shared vision, need for innovation and research as well as improvements of the manufacturing base.

New brand protection techniques unveiled
Jura JSP, a company located in Vienna, and the German firm WEILBURGER Graphics have agreed to cooperate on the development of new security processes for the print industry. Under the name TWIN-ICI, and on the basis of market demands, the two companies have developed a novel security element which could revolutionize print production in the field of brand protection.
TWIN-ICI is a combination of ICI technology (Invisible Constant Information) and innovative UV-active coatings and printing-inks. Thanks to the further technological development of the ICI process developed at Jura JSP, together with the coatings in the SENOSAFE® series, specially produced by WEILBURGER Graphics for this purpose and coordinated with one another in terms of their technical properties, TWIN-ICI, which is completely invisible in normal light conditions, can be used not only on non-printed areas but also on solid colours or half-tones. This gives brand owners the greatest possible freedom in their design, since the security elements are not incorporated until after completion of the design process. This means that thanks to the TWIN-ICI process the simple yet effective adaptation of existing packaging or label designs presents just as few problems as the implementation of new ones.
Both companies are active members of PrintCity, an alliance of businesses in the global printing, packaging and publishing markets.

Magno’s consistency intensified
Consistency, whatever the weight and surface, is the theme of Sappi's latest promotional campaign for its Magno range of premium woodfree coated sheets.
"We have continued to build on Magno's reputation for consistency and reliability across the grammage range by improving the surface quality of our board weights, so printers, designers and end users only need to use one brand to match text and cover for their uniquely special job," says Magno Business Manager Margaret Baker. "A significant investment at our Maastricht mill has improved the base formation of our boards, so Magno now offers improved visual appearance, runnability and printability from 90 through to 400g/m2."
The 'Consistency Intensified' campaign is being spearheaded by a new brochure, which features the two surfaces Magno Star and Magno Satin. For each quality, it compares the three key areas of CIE whiteness, ink setting and surface quality across the grammage range against those of four leading competitive coated woodfree papers. The results clearly indicate that Magno consistently performs at the highest level. The brochure also contains printed samples, with Magno Star on one side and Magno Satin on the other, in 100, 135, 170, 250 and 350g/m2 'waterfalls'. The vibrant, shiny green image of the tropical plant printed on Magno Star highlights the intense colour and crisp detail that can be achieved with this quality, while the silky, soft image on Magno Satin shows this paper's smooth reproduction and texture.

Heidelberg goes for remote service
Heidelberg is equipping all its Computer-to-Plate (CtP) systems, both the Suprasetter and Prosetter families, with Internet-based Remote Service functions.
"Customer demand for intelligent, online-based services is growing all the time, which is not surprising given the clear benefits this Heidelberg solution offers as an overarching technology. While rapid reaction times help boost machine availability, the drop in service callouts drives down costs," explains Bernhard Steinel, Senior Vice President Service at Heidelberg, neatly summing up how Remote Services benefit users.
The security of the Internet-based Heidelberg Remote Service linkup has been certified repeatedly by the independent company TÜViT GmbH, most recently in May 2007.

Romaco demonstrates its Sterile Processing
Romaco FrymaKoruma will be exhibiting a unit from its portfolio of vacuum processors for liquids and semi-solids production at AAPS 2007 in San Diego. Part of a range incorporating models for batch sizes up to 4000 liters, the Dinex Lab is ideal for formulation development and scale-up applications.
The Dinex is a high-end system for the production of suspensions, creams, emulsions and gels across a wide viscosity range. The system is particularly suited to complex formulations, thanks to its homogenization system. This operates on the proven rotor-stator system but with the added benefit of axial adjustment of the stator, which allows regulation of the shear force exerted on the product. When the stator is placed in the shearing zone, the machine produces perfect dispersing with good pumping characteristics. When the stator is placed outside the dispersing zone, the machine offers excellent pumping characteristics at a lower shear force, process parameters that are ideal for sensitive products.

Crossroads for publishing automation
Gradual unveiled Crossroads, a communication platform that offers automation products for publishing workflows. The objective is to present users with solid information on solutions that combine products from various vendors, in cooperation with those vendors and with the user community at large. Crossroads will take a concrete presence in a variety of ways, such as a web site and a user forum, and it will also be present at selected trade shows and industry events.
“It is no longer possible to automate workflows from end-to-end by installing software from a single vendor,” states Peter Camps, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Gradual Software. “Combining products from multiple vendors allows selecting best-of-breed technology, yet also raises concerns about interoperability. Crossroads offers a more unified view of the final solution and addresses those concerns. Responsibility for each of the products – and for their innovation – remains with the participating vendors.”

Are books from China a potential health risk?
The European printing industry has become increasingly concerned about growing imports of children books from non-European countries, and particularly from China. Intergraf wants to raise public awareness about potential risks, and calls for better investigation and controls of the contents in imported printed products.
Recently the public was made aware that some toys, coming from China, were not fulfilling European safety and quality requirements for children products and were therefore recalled by the retailer. In one case, diaries and calendars were also recalled from consumers due to the inks containing lead.
These reports create concern that any children books imported from China could carry similar defects. The findings demonstrated that there is a lack of control of incoming substances and products at European borders. The European legislation on labelling of individual dangerous substances is quite extensive but hardly put together in a comprehensive document applicable to specific finished products.
Children books, particularly those intended for very young children, are often very sophisticated products involving more than the normal printing. In order to stimulate the child’s observation skills, they can include plastic relief printing or decoration containing attractive golden or coloured powder, or liquid. These products will generally be produced by a so called screen printing process, allowing several layers and multiple substrate printing.

Gidue’s Intelligence at LabelExpo
In Hall 6, booths H80-H90, the Italian press manufacturer Gidue will display an army of three presses created to respond to every need of the label and packaging converters. Intelligence will be the main theme in the stand.
The Intelligence of Gidue presses means consistency of control on the machine, fast set-up times and low wastage, independently from speed or job changes. Web tension and temperature are digitally controlled (Intelligent Web™), printing and inking pressure are automatically adjusted during operation and superior servo-assisted register and pre-register capabilities (Intelligent Register™) result in trouble-free operation, where all the risks are predictable and thus avoidable. The operator, who becomes a pure press supervisor, is given more time to concentrate on productivity and output quality rather than on basic operations.
The PC-controlled Intelligence, inherent in all latest Gidue presses, can be easily connected to any printing company’s Management Information System. The MIS can send job orders, job planning and additional information directly to the operator through an user-friendly program interface compatible with Microsoft® and Ethernet platforms. The system ensures an interactive and bi-directional communication plus reducing paper order flow and minimizing loss of information.
